Auto Insurance
If you want to register and operate a vehicle in Oregon, you must carry at least the minimum auto insurance mandated by the state. Oregon has some of the most stringent requirements for liability coverage, but this actually protects both you and other motorists on the road.
If you are purchasing auto insurance, you must have this coverage, at minimum:
Bodily injury and property damage liability
- $25,000 per person
- $50,000 per crash for bodily injury to others
- $20,000 per crash for damage to others’ property
Personal injury protection
- $15,000 per person
Uninsured motorist
- $25,000 per person
- $50,000 per crash for bodily injury
You may elect to carry more liability insurance than the minimum the state requires, however. We often recommend this for our clients in Portland, Beaverton, and Gresham, especially if they have new or young drivers in the house or if they are high-net-worth individuals.
Additional Coverage Offers Better Protection of Your Vehicle
Keep in mind that liability coverage protects you and other drivers for things like medical bills and damaged property after an accident. However, it does not cover your vehicle if you are at fault in an accident.
That’s why we encourage most drivers to purchase additional collision coverage. If you rely on your vehicle to get to work, school, errands, or family activities, you will appreciate this protection. It covers repairs to your vehicle, so you can resume your normal life more quickly after an accident without having to pay thousands out of your own pocket.
To complete full coverage of your car or truck, which may be required if you finance your vehicle, we also recommend comprehensive insurance. This covers your vehicle in the event of theft, vandalism, and damage or loss due to fire and most natural disasters.
